The Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa actively leads social responsibility community projects, originally initiated by Prof Karen Sliwa when she headed the Soweto Cardiovascular Research Unit at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Several of these community projects were initiated more than 10 years ago and received substantial support from various donors.
The HEDU Africa website was developed as a multimedia resource that became a widely used tool for preventing the causes and managing the consequences of cardiovascular diseases in Africa, both during pregnancy and postpartum. The project was initiated by Prof Karen Sliwa, with the collective expertise of Prof John Anthony (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Groote Schuur Hospital), Prof Friedrich Thienemann University of Cape Town and Dr Kim Lamont (National Research Foundation Scarce Skills Fellowship Programme).
The information on the HEDU Africa web pages is widely distributed to healthcare providers in South Africa and beyond who manage pregnant women.
