Johanna Ralston, CEO of the World Heart Federation made an announcement at its General Assembly which was held during the recent World Congress of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Heath 2016 that, Prof Karen Sliwa of South Africa has been elected by the membership as President-Elect of the Federation, marking two firsts: she is the first female president and the first from the African Continent.
Prof Sliwa, Dr Feriel Azibani (Post-doctoral Research fellow) & Olivia Briton (Project Coordinator) attended the 3rd World Congress on Acute Heart Failure, where Prof Sliwa presented the recently published results of the BAHEF study (European Journal of Heart Failure (2016)doi:10.1002/ejhf.581) in a Late Breaking Trial session as well as a talk on ‘Valvular disease in Pregnancy’ during the ‘Cardiac challenges in Pregnancy’ session.
Congratulations are in order to Hatter Institute’s soccer team affectionately known as Mad Hatters, for winning the best dressed team in an annual IDM soccer tournament held on Friday March 11, 2016. The award carried a prize of R500.
Nicholas Woudberg, 2nd year PhD student, in the Cardioprotection Group, Hatter Institute, Department of Medicine, UCT, recently attended the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research meeting held in Fribourg, Switzerland from the 14th to the 15th of January 2016.
In October 2015, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Francis Peterson , Prof Lionel Opie and multiple researchers from different Institutions in the Western Cape gathered together to celebrate the opening of the new Lionel Opie Preclinical Imaging Core Facility at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town.
