Increasing health awareness in Soweto via SMS messaging
24 Jun 2014 - 16:15
Soweto consists of 1.1-million people and represents the largest black community in South Africa. There have been changes in both the socio-economic and demographic environment which have led to epidemiological transition.
Mobile health (mHealth) is evolving as a valuable tool to advance healthcare in areas of limited access to health services. Limited access is associated with poor antenatal care, and maternal and perinatal mortality.
SMS services facilitate access and wide dissemination of health information, as evidenced in Zanzibar, Tanzania (Wired Mothers).
