UCT South African student grabbed the prize for best poster presentation at the annual Swiss Cardiovascular Research meeting!
Nicholas Woudberg, 2nd year PhD student, in the Cardioprotection Group, Hatter Institute, Department of Medicine, UCT, recently attended the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research meeting held in Fribourg, Switzerland from the 14th to the 15th of January 2016.
The meeting was very much geared toward local scientists with the majority of presentations and posters from researchers in Switzerland. However, all presentations were in English and a number of distinguished speakers presented interesting research in areas of cardiovascular health, diabetes and inflammatory disorders. There was a primary focus on basic sciences and of particular value were presentations of new techniques for the analysis of lipid profiles. Talks by Dr Sarah Pedretti and Dr Miguel Frias from the University of Geneva in particular were very stimulating and focussed on High-density lipoprotein (HDL) function with respect to microRNA induction and glycation in diabetic patients.
Nicholas presented his poster summarizing my previous work on HDL function and subclass in South African women. He received positive and constructive feedback on his work and was awarded the prize for the best poster presentation at the meeting.
His trip to Switzerland was made possible with the support from the Hatter Institute, University of Cape Town, SA Heart and The Heart Failure Society of South Africa for funding this visit.
